Rings, Vibes & Faith: More Than Just Fashion

It is common to see young men and women today wearing bold rings on their thumbs or pinky fingers. Unlike the thin gold wedding bands of the past, these rings are big, chunky, and stylish. For many, it’s just fashion. But can what we wear carry more meaning than we sometimes realize?

Ghanaian Context In our culture, chiefs and elders have long worn gold rings as part of regalia, representing power and wealth. Today, youth wear rings for style, often influenced by global fashion. But in Ghana, symbols are never neutral. A spiritual person can 'read' you by what you wear and test your spirit right through your ring. This doesn’t mean every fashionable ring is demonic, but it does remind us that symbols can carry unseen weight.

What the Bible Says About Rings

Authority and Favour: Pharaoh gave Joseph a signet ring as a symbol of authority and favour (Genesis 41:42).

Transfer of Authority: King Ahasuerus gave Mordecai his royal ring, allowing him to issue decrees (Esther 8:2).

Identity and Restoration: The prodigal son was given a ring when his father welcomed him home (Luke 15:22).

Marriage and Unity: Used as symbols of covenant love, echoing Genesis 2:24 ('the two shall become one flesh').

Modesty and Inner Beauty: Peter reminds us that our beauty should not come from outward adornment or elaborate jewelry, but from a gentle and quiet spirit which is precious before God (1 Peter 3:3–5).

These examples show that rings in Scripture were never just decoration they carried covenant, identity, authority, and at times, a warning not to let adornment replace godliness.

What This Means for Christian Youth

As Paul wrote, “Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial” (1 Corinthians 10:23). Wearing rings is not sin in itself. But we are called to walk in wisdom (Ephesians 5:15–16). Before we wear that chunky thumb or pinky ring, we should ask:

 1. What message does this send about me?

 2. Does this honor God or confuse my witness?

 3. Could it open doors spiritually that I do not want opened?

 4. Have they been consecrated for the purpose for which am wearing them?

Rings in Ghana today sit at the crossroads of fashion, tradition, and faith. As young Christians, we’re called not just to follow trends, but to live as examples (1 Timothy 4:12). Let’s enjoy creativity and self-expression but do well to consecrate anything you get from open market before use on any part of our body. Always know that your choices, speak both in the physical and spiritual world.

LOOK COOL! LOOK FLY! BUT BE SPIRITUALLY SMART!!
